Energy-Efficient Glazing

How energy-efficient glazing works

Double-glazed windows have two sheets of glass with a gap between them, to create an insulating barrier that keeps heat in. This is sometimes filled with gas. Triple-glazed windows have three sheets of glass, but aren't always better than double-glazed windows.

Energy-efficient windows must also deal with:

  • how well they stop heat from passing through the window
  • how much sunlight travels through the glass
  • how little air can leak in or out around the window
double glazed windows energy ratings

Energy rating

Some window and door manufacturers show the energy efficiency of their products using an energy rating scheme from A to G - like the one used for appliances such as fridges. The whole window (the frame and the glass) is assessed on its efficiency at retaining heat. The scheme is run by the British Fenestration Rating Council (BFRC), and you can find more information on the BFRC website. Our products go one stage further. We have achieved a Window Energy Rating (WER) for our products which has been verified by The British Standards Institute giving us our very own kitemark. You can be sure that when we say our products are "A" rated.... they really are!

Low Emissivity Glass

Vital to the energy efficiency of the Window is the glass itself. All our "A" rated windows featured Planitherm Glass.

Planitherm products use a special coating to reflect heat from domestic heat sources back into the room, rather than allowing it to escape through the windows. At the same time, this coating allows free heat and light from the sun to pass through the glass, warming the room and further contributing to the energy efficiency of the windows and helping to reduce your energy bills.

Pane Styles

Astragal Casement

An astragal bar or grid gives the attractive appearance of a Georgian window, divided into multiple panes. But unlike Georgian window bars, which are integral to the window and set inside the sealed units, astragal bars are fixed to the glass on the inside and out. So you get the traditional, crafted look of multiple panes on a single piece of glazing.

Georgian Bar

The glazing bars used is this style of window are placed in-between the glazing unit and are not surface mounted.

Leaded Windows

Timeless and classic leaded casement windows and leaded bays complement the preference towards nostalgic house design. Our traditional British ‘opening out’ windows are tailor made to any size and adapted to your specification of leaded glass to give that authentic period look.
